Being a sustainable business and marketing yourself as such can give your company a competitive advantage by attracting loyal customers that are environmentally and socially aware and driven.
A survey carried out this year by IBM Institute for Business Value (IBV) of 16,000 global consumers found that more than half (51%) of respondents say environmental sustainability is more important to them today than it was 12 months ago. In 2022, 49% of consumers say they’ve paid a premium—an average of 59% more—for products branded as sustainable or socially responsible in the last 12 months.
If you’ve made your business more sustainable, now is the time to shout about it! So how do you tell people about your sustainability credentials?
5 Tips to Marketing Your Sustainable Business
1. Add all the details to your website
Create an easy-to-find, dedicated page on your website with your company’s sustainability credentials, mission statement and goals. Or add this information to an ‘About Us’ or ‘Corporate Responsibility’ page.
2. Add Sustainability as a Theme to your Social Media Strategy
Make sure you regularly discuss your sustainability – your achievements, goals, and projects on social media. Bring out your human side by sharing your sustainability journey, the good parts, and the challenges! Show your audience the impact they make by choosing your company and highlight any community initiatives your business is involved in.
3. Get Certified
Get your business assessed and certified as ‘green certified’. Boost credibility and customer trust by displaying this certification on your website, any printed marketing materials such as brochures, your business socials, editor notes section in press releases (if appropriate), office buildings, vehicles etc…
There are various sustainability certifications out there, check what sustainability certifications are most widely used in your industry.
4. Include Details in Recruitment Advertising
Add details of your company’s social/environmental impact as an employer/local business to any recruitment sites you may use. For example, a fair approach to recruiting and developing staff, and recruiting local staff can help integrate your business into the community and improve your reputation.
5. Share your Sustainability Journey in Industry and Business Press
Write an article on your sustainability journey or key sustainability issues in your industry either in industry publications or business press.
