What is a BID?

A Business Improvement District (BID) is a geographically defined area, where businesses come together and agree to invest collectively in projects and services the businesses believe will improve their trading environment. BID projects are new and additional projects and services; they do not replace services that are already provided by Stirling Council and other statutory bodies.

BIDs are developed, managed and paid for by those who are liable to pay non-domestic rates (NDR) by means of a compulsory levy.

The first BID was established, 55 years ago, in Bloor West Village, Toronto, Canada, by the district’s business community. Today there are well over 1800 BIDs worldwide with 330 BIDs in
the UK.

BIDs can support regeneration, grow local economies, create local employment and create a cleaner, safer trading environment.

How GFS supports Stirling businesses

Over the past five years Go Forth has made several key improvements for the city centre and has many more planned for the next term.

Our vision is to work together to create new and welcoming opportunities without compromising the heritage of Stirling.

Without a BID for Stirling, over £1.4 million BID levy investment in supporting city centre businesses will be lost over the next five years. BIDs also have access to external assistance and funding not available to individual businesses. Go Forth has secured an additional £300,000 in external funding in the past two years alone. That equates to an additional 62% of income.

We believe that the best way to achieve lasting and sustainable change, and best value for money, is by working in partnership. We work alongside STEP and business gateway making sure businesses of Stirling have many avenues of support.
