At STEP we believe that real progress comes from action, not just recognition. From supporting female entrepreneurs to ensuring strong representation in leadership and frontline roles, we are proud to be making a tangible impact on gender equality in business and beyond.
Supporting Female-Led Start-Ups
- 57% of the start-ups we’ve supported in 2024 are female-led
In 2024, 57% of the start-ups we’ve supported were led by women, reflecting the drive and ambition of female entrepreneurs in our region. While the proportion of female-led start-ups fluctuates annually, we remain dedicated to breaking down barriers and providing practical, flexible support to help more women take their business ideas forward.
From expert support to business advice tailored to their sector, we offer a range of services from events and business advice that work around the schedules and demands of modern business owners, making it easier for women to launch and grow their ventures with confidence.
STEP delivers the Business Gateway service in Stirling on behalf of Stirling Council, which is fully funded by the Scottish Government, and free of charge for you and your business.
Empowering Women in Established Businesses
- 35% of our tenants are female-led businesses
Beyond start-ups, over a third of our tenants are female-led businesses, demonstrating the growing presence of women in established industries. We know that access to the right workspace, professional networks and business development opportunities is vital for long-term success. STEP continues to support women in building and scaling their businesses by providing flexible office space, collaborative environments, networking opportunities and business support on their doorstep.
Laura Melville, STEP’s Director of Property and Operations, highlights the importance of creating an inclusive business environment:
“We see more and more women choosing STEP as their business base, and that’s because we offer more than just office space. We create a supportive community where businesses can collaborate, access expert advice and grow at their own pace. Whether it’s providing flexible lease options, networking opportunities, or business support, we’re committed to ensuring that all of our businesses have everything they need to succeed.”
Women in Leadership: Shaping the Future
- 50% of our Leadership Team is female
- 75% of our staff are women
Gender balance in leadership isn’t just about representation—it’s about ensuring diverse perspectives influence decision-making. STEP is committed to fostering a workplace where women are empowered to take on leadership roles at all levels.
Vicky Murphy, STEP’s Director of HR and Organisational Development, explains why this is crucial:
“We don’t just support women in business—we ensure they are leading it. Having a strong female presence in leadership allows us to create an inclusive and forward-thinking workplace. Our focus is on empowering women at every career stage, from entry-level roles to the boardroom.”
Breaking Barriers in Firefighting
Firefighting remains a male-dominated profession, but that is changing. Over the past year, STEP has welcomed multiple Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) Watches to train at our Stirling Enterprise Park, demonstrating that firefighting is a career open to everyone. Our facility offers a varied and complex environment, allowing firefighters to develop their skills in real-world conditions.
The Bigger Picture: Stirling’s Commitment to Women
Stirling has a thriving business community, and organisations like STEP play a key role in ensuring women have access to the opportunities and support they need. From providing affordable office space to offering networking and training, initiatives like ours are vital in reducing barriers for women in business and leadership.
Depute Leader and Vice Convener of Stirling Council’s Finance, Economy and Corporate Support Committee, Cllr Jen Preston emphasises the importance of this support:
“As we mark International Women’s Day, it’s encouraging to see organisations such as STEP actively supporting women in business across Stirling.
“With female-led businesses making up a third of their tenants and a strong track record of supporting female entrepreneurs, they are making a real difference. This kind of support is invaluable in creating a more inclusive economy that offers opportunities to entrepreneurial local women and helps Stirling’s business community thrive.
“We’re proud to be setting an example of placing women prominently in positions of influence within Stirling Council where 70% of our Corporate Management Team and managerial roles are held by women.”
Looking Ahead: A Future of Equal Opportunity
STEP’s commitment to supporting women extends beyond International Women’s Day. Whether it’s through supporting female-led businesses, providing opportunities for women in leadership, or supporting those women who are represented in emergency services, we remain dedicated to fostering an environment where gender is never a barrier to success.
This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the achievements of the women in our community and reaffirm our commitment to creating lasting change.
