Recently I had the chance to spend a day with our rural business adviser, Traci. We set out on a tour to see how STEP supports rural businesses in Scotland, and it was an eye-opening experience! Here’s a rundown of our day.
First Stop: The Green Welly Shop, Tyndrum
We kicked our day off with an impromptu visit to the iconic Green Welly Shop in Tyndrum. Traci chatted with a staff member, highlighting her role and the range of support that STEP offers.
Next: The Real Food Café
Next, we headed to the Real Food Café to catch up with Sarah and her team. The café has benefited from STEP’s support in the past, and Traci was there to make sure they continue to receive any assistance they might need. Her role as rural adviser maintaining strong relationships and providing ongoing support to local businesses based rurally.
Discovering Killin
Our journey continued to Killin, where Traci introduced me to the delightful Shutters café, renowned for its cakes. We also visited MacGregor’s Community Hub to catch up with Paula was excited to show us the plans for the upcoming refurbishments. Drawing from her experience, Traci shared some great tips on how they could improve the shop layout to bring in more visitors and locals.
Spontaneous Stops and Iconic Sights
As we wandered to capture the iconic Falls of Dochart, we passed the gift shop Escape in Killin, another business Traci regularly checks in on. Spontaneous visits are key to Traci’s role, so when we came across the Old Mill, she reintroduced herself and STEP’s services to Cheryl, the coordinator. Cheryl proudly showcased the makers’ space and local artists’ work and invited us to visit the upstairs exhibition currently on display.
Monthly “Meet the Expert” Sessions
In Killin and other rural Stirling locations, STEP offers monthly “Meet the Expert: Business Adviser” sessions, providing opportunities to meet with a Business Gateway adviser. These sessions, bookable through Eventbrite, offer tailored advice and support for your business.
The Golden Larches, Balquhidder
Our next stop was The Golden Larches in Balquhidder, where Traci met with a client who had previously sought business support. The team shared their updates and requirements, and Traci discussed next steps and additional support, such as HR and IT services. Traci will get back in touch once she has found the best resources and solutions to support the team at The Golden Larches further with their business plans.
A Unique Highlight: The Shark Toilet
The visit’s highlight was the famous Shark Toilet at The Golden Larches, a quirky design that draws tourists and locals alike, adding charm to the café.
Final Stop: Kilmahog
On our way back, we stopped in Kilmahog, known for its Highland cows. Traci took this opportunity to explain what a business support adviser does at STEP and how we tailor our support to meet the different needs of each business. Whether a business is just starting out or looking to grow, our team is there to offer practical help and guidance.
Before wrapping up, Traci stated, “No two days in my role are the same, which keeps this job very interesting. I do, however, love being out in rural Stirlingshire and meeting the diverse range of businesses that contribute so much to the rural economy. It is my pleasure to support them through the unique challenges they face, helping them to thrive and grow.”
Wrapping Up the Day
Spending the day with Traci was an eye-opening experience. It was inspiring to see first-hand the dedication and personalised support that STEP provides to rural businesses. Traci’s genuine passion for helping local businesses succeed was evident in every interaction. This journey through Tyndrum, Killin, Balquhidder, and Kilmahog highlighted the vital role STEP plays in nurturing and sustaining the vibrant business community in rural Scotland. It’s clear that with STEP’s unwavering support, businesses in these picturesque locations are well-equipped to flourish and grow.
