Revolutionising Air Quality Monitoring: The UK’s First LiDAR-based Traffic Monitoring System deployed in Stirling

Seoul Robotics and Digiflec have recently collaborated with Stirling Council to deploy the UK’s first LiDAR-based traffic monitoring system. This marks a significant milestone in the Smart Village Air Quality project, which aims to improve air quality and raise awareness of the factors that contribute to poor air quality.

LiDAR, which stands for Light Detection and Ranging, is a remote sensing technology that uses laser pulses to measure distance and generate precise 3D maps of the environment. In this case, the LiDAR-based traffic monitoring system is being used to detect and classify traffic and track its time and volume. This information is then cross-referenced with weather and air quality data to determine potential correlation.

The project’s ultimate goal is to better understand the factors that contribute to poor air quality and raise awareness among the public.

By tracking traffic patterns, the project hopes to identify areas where air quality may be particularly poor due to high levels of traffic, and develop targeted strategies to address the issue.

The Smart Village Air Quality project is part of a wider effort to improve air quality and sustainability in Stirling and other communities across the UK. By harnessing cutting-edge and AI technologies like LiDAR and leveraging data analytics, the project aims to provide valuable insights into the complex factors that influence air quality and develop effective strategies to address them.
