Celebrating The Trossachs Search and Rescue Dogs

At STEP we were delighted to host the Trossachs Search and Rescue Team and their amazing dogs for a truly memorable day last Wednesday.

The visit featured a special presentation by Lord Provost Elaine Watterson, who awarded the team with a well-deserved rosette in recognition of their outstanding service. The highlight of the day was, of course, the dogs—Bowie, Merlin, and Zak. They were thrilled with their personalised goody bags gifted by STEP filled with toys, treats, and beautiful blankets lovingly crafted by Freckles Designs.

Angela, the owner of Freckles Designs, shared her thoughts on the experience:
“It was an honour to create these personalised blankets for such extraordinary dogs. Seeing them in action and knowing our small gesture adds a touch of comfort to these heroes is incredibly rewarding.”

Laura Melville, Director of Property and Operations at STEP, who organised the awards presentation, also reflected on the day: “It was a privilege to welcome the Trossachs Search and Rescue Team to STEP again and recognise the incredible work they do. Watching the dogs in action was a humbling reminder of the dedication and skill it takes to save lives. We’re proud to play even a small role in celebrating their efforts.”

We were also privileged to see these talented dogs in action. The team set up live rescue scenarios to demonstrate the dogs’ exceptional skills and the vital role they play in search and rescue operations. In one scenario, held in our flexible business hub, Ladder55, members of the STEP staff hid in a vacant unit. Using their impressive scent-tracking abilities, the dogs quickly located them, showcasing their incredible training and teamwork.

Behind this display of skill is a dedicated team of volunteers who work tirelessly to provide 24/7 support for those in need. Remarkably, this essential service has been sustained without any government funding since 1998. Instead, it relies entirely on grants, local business sponsorships, and the generosity of individual donors.

To continue their vital work, the Trossachs Search and Rescue Team needs our support more than ever. They are a shining example of dedication, teamwork, and service, and we’re so proud to have had the opportunity to celebrate their achievements. A huge thank you to the stars of the day—Bowie, Merlin, and Zak.
