Local salon a cut above the rest

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]An award winning hair and make-up salon, which added another piece of glassware to its trophy cabinet in February, is set to expand into larger premises in Stirling in May.

Dunblane-based Honey & Violet, which was set up in 2012, was named the Hair & Make-up Salon of the Year at the Scottish Wedding Awards on February 27th.

Now, owners Lisa Blishaa and Nicola Manson, who have been supported by Business Gateway Stirling, plan to more than triple the size of their salon by moving to 18 Maxwell Place, Stirling, in May.

The move will allow the life-long friends, who won Best New Business at the Stirling Business Awards last year and Salon Design of the Year at The Scottish Hair & Beauty Awards in 2015, to expand their services over two floors and potentially create four jobs.

Lisa said: “It’s a very exciting time for the business. Winning the latest award was a great boost and thanks to recent help from Business Gateway Stirling we successfully applied for a loan from the Royal Bank of Scotland that will help us move into Stirling City Centre. The new salon will allow us to expand our treatment rooms, double the size of our hair section, and introduce a nail bar.

“Right from the beginning Business Gateway has been a great help – from the start-up courses that expanded our knowledge to recent help with our online presence. We’d built a strong clientele over the years through word of mouth and Facebook, but specialist support from Business Gateway last year allowed us to develop our website that transformed our online booking system. Getting that support helped us attract new customers and made it easier for them to book an appointment with us.

“Happy clients are the lifeblood of any salon and we’d like to thank all those who took the time to vote for us in this year’s Scottish Wedding Awards. Knowing their votes helped us pick up the title makes the win even more special, and we can’t wait to show them our new salon which we hope to officially open at the end of May.”

Lynn Dickson, Business Gateway Stirling, Business Adviser, said: “Honey & Violet is a great example of a business that has used our expertise to help them get started and grow. The owners have also benefited from a total of £5,250 worth of funding from the Princes Trust over the years. Initially using our advice to expand their business know-how, the duo then benefitted from support that helped them grow their online presence and most recently used our advice to pick the best loan that would help them expand. Lisa and Nicola’s hard work is paying off; they are a great success story.”

Sprint Design

Sprint Design has been a tenant at STEP's Stirling Enterprise Park since 1992.

Sprint Design started it’s life in Alloa in 1984. The company making Scottish tea towels, dialect t-shirts and school wear, soon earned contracts with a number of tourist attractions including the Wallace Monument and Stirling Castle.

As the company began to rapidly grow and technology moved on the team moved to STEP in 1992. In 1997 the company had extreme success in the export market supplying Celtic designs with stock for America, Japan and Canada.

In 2014 Robyn Gilmour who had worked with the business since it’s conception took on the role as director.

STEP has been a good base for us all of these years. The team look after the building and has helped facilitate our expansion plans over the years.

Their son, Struan Robb, joined the business straight from school and was later joined by Lorna Robb in 2007. The company had an ambitious growth strategy which included growing the existing business through developing new markets such as biomass and introducing new product ranges.  As with many small businesses, the company partners were focused on the day to day running of the business and found it difficult to prioritise ‘time out’ to developing a strategy to support these goals.

How we helped
To help develop a business strategy, Fraser C Robb accessed a business consultant through the specialist support service funded by Business Gateway and the European Regional Development Fund.

The consultant initially met with the business partners to ascertain its current business activities and its challenges as well as future growth aspirations. These findings then formed the basis of a half day business strategy workshop which helped focus the business partners, ensuring there was clarity and agreement on both where the business was currently at and what future success would look like for Fraser C Robb.

Following completion, a report was issued by the consultant to reflect the discussions which subsequently was developed into the business strategy, ensuring the management team is focused and aligned with the overall organisational goals.

Lorna Robb at Fraser Robb commented, “The strategy workshop has been very beneficial, allowing management time out the business they would not have taken, it’s an excellent resource.”[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Let’s start helping your business” style=”outline” shape=”square” color=”blue” align=”left” link=”url:http%3A%2F%2Fstepscotland.co.uk%2Fcontact-us%2F||” el_class=”get_my_copy”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
